Family Tree

LI: To create a family tree.

This week for our Te Reo Challenges, we did a challenge where we created a family tree and we could add some patterns. My family tree is fairly big to which I couldn't fit them all on my DLO. I enjoyed this activity as I could learn more about my family tree.

Te Reo Challenge | Design

LI: To design a kowhaiwhai pattern for our PBS Te Reo Blog.

Kowhaiwhai are traditional Maori art patterns, majority are made up of swirls or korus, they hold the history of Maori times having the art tell the stories of the past. The Kowhaiwhai patterns are designs displayed throughout a wharenui or a Maori meeting house. My design features many korus which symbolises new life, strength, growth and peace they also symbolise friendship and aroha. The border is those who formed today protecting us from tomorrow.

Maori with Whaea Ode

Maori this week was about what and how to use the poi. The poi is a ball on a string, inside the ball there is light stuffing and usually the string is made of rope or flax. Whaia Ode taught us some ways of how to use a poi, all the techniques we learnt involved a lot of wrist movement. We also learnt how to do the poi with our left hand because usually you do the poi with both hands. It was hard at first but we soon got the hang of it. After learning some moves we watched 2 videos that were from kapa haka groups. The moves that they did seemed complicated but entertaining at the same time. We then tried some moves again after the video. I really enjoyed learning the poi and I can't wait for next weeks lesson.
